Just a few years ago when renting a car I always made sure to check it has a CD player but these days it seems iPod will be the preferred choice.

Apple just announced deals with General Motors and Ford to include an iPod connection in most of the new models of these top American car makers. Such deals are already in place with BMW, Acura, Audi, Ferrari, Honda, Nissan, and Volkswagen among others...

Now why not just put a USB plug or something similar, which would make the cars compatible with all audio devices. Sure, iPod holds 75% of the market but who says it's still not a good idea to have options. Obviously my personal history with iPod is a little bitter, after the first (and so far only) iPod I ever bough turned out to be faulty and fried my laptop's motherboard instantly when I plugged the cable in. But oh well... if everyone else thinks it's great... smiley

Steven Chen and Chad Hurley have the reason to be happy - they're the latest dot com billionaires. They founded YouTube.com in February 2005 - less than two years ago, and just today sold it to Google for $1.65 billion dollars. During this time YouTube has become one of internet's most visited websites and the hottest topic among internet users around the world.

Chen, 29 and Hurley, 28 can be compared to the Google founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page, and in fact after the deal Brin said "This really reminds me of Google just a few short years ago." The deal is an all-stock transaction which basically makes sure that the YouTube founders will keep working for Google in the future. The company will maintain its brand and work from its office so it seems (for now) mainly just an ownership change rather than a full scale merger.

Time will tell if this was a good move for Google or not. While YouTube is unbelieveably popular, it is also facing a number of lawsuits from media companies who claim YouTube's network contains a lot of copyrighted material. Lately YouTube has been making deals with the biggest recording companies to avoid such lawsuits but thinking how fast Napster fell just a few years ago... you just never know. But perhaps it will help them to be part of Google and gain from the leverage of the larger company.

In any case, YouTube is an amazing achievement! Less than two years from zero to one of the world's most visited websites with very small budget - way to go. smiley
